I have recently been working on making my house more energy efficient. I started building my own solar panels and am very excited about building them and starting to power my house with them. I am making this post to ask people for advice on other things I can do to make my home greener. If you having suggestions please post them in a reply! Thanks!

The 2 biggest points I try to make are 1) going green doesn’t have to involve sacrifice because people always think they have to give up something and 2) anytime you conserve gas or electricity your wallet gets a little heavier, and since most people think with their wallets, it’s a good point to make.
get rid of those old lightbulbs! :(

Great! just curious though on how much does it cost to build one? I am convincing my husband to built our own solar panel too..and we need some tips from those who already have their own solar panels. Do you have a recycle glass coffee table? well i guess its a good addition to your home since your already starting to make it more greener(home)..

its not just about the wallets, from time to time i hear people saying "i dont have a time to be green, i have to much work or something else to do". so it`s also about saving time but most important it is all about our behaviour and how we get use to live

That's great to hear from you. What kind of solar panel are you working on? What materials are you using?

The only problem is that 'going green' can be an expensive job. Particularly when we are talking about solar panels and using turbines in the home.
Our latest quote for solar panels to completely run the house and our workshop space came to 40,000 and that is money that we simply do not have.

You can replace those old fluorescent lamps or lightbulbs that are not too energy efficient. They consume twice as much power than the newer ones.
If you can turn off the lights in parts of your house that are not really necessary that would be good too. It doesn't only save you money, it reduces energy consumption.

I have replaced most of the lights in my place with energy saving daylight bulbs.. Both healthy and energy saving. Yes they are slightly pricy, but they add a lot of value to your home!!

I am all about finding new ways and new products for going green. I found a site that lets your share stories, testimonials, etc. on any green products, services, companies, etc. Its called the Energy Conservation club on the lowerelectricbilltoday website.

if you live in an area that uses oil for heating your home you can go to SavOnHeatingOil.com they have a product called a catalyst that will clean the oil and uses less oil to heat the home. so it helps the earth and your wallet. it too is an investment that pays back over time but usually only about 2 years. Not bad and it's no where near the cost of solar panels.

We use an electric car, although this does increase your electric bill, it certainly reduces your CO2 emissions and cost of petrol.
The other thing we do is to look and think about what we are buying, do we need it and is it packaged in an environmentally friendly way.

I replaced all the old energy guzzling light bulbs with super efficient bulb and cut my electric bill by almost $50 per month(Lots of lights in my house). I also replaced my refrigerator with an energy efficient model. It's kind of fun. I've gotten the kids involved with the energy saving project and they think its awesome.

i bought an eco Kettle seeing as its used 365 days of the year. energy saving of about 20-30% also put radiator reflectors behind my radiators to prevent heat escaping to the walls, i bought a wind-up mp3 , sewn a old sheet on to curtains to add extra layer of insulation. close all the curtains at night it keeps the heat in. insulation on the roof cos you lose loads of energy there.

Cut toothpaste tubes in half when you have squeezed everything out of them you'll get a few more go's.
Do the same with shampoo & conditioner bottles, it takes i good stab with a scissors to pierce it, so becareful, but you get a good lot extra out of it.
Squash your toilet paper rolls so the tubes are flat, you don't use as much because it doesn't roll as easily.
If you have free shelves and gaps in your freezer, crumple up newspapers to fill it. Its cost more money to cool a space of air.
If you have any tips yourself to add or want to find more give us a buzz,
cheers thanks
"Research from Murtaugh and Schlax at Oregon State University shows that a hypothetical American woman who switches to a more fuel-efficient car, drives less, recycles, installs more efficient light bulbs, and replaces her refrigerator and windows with energy-saving models, would increase her carbon legacy by 40 times if she has two children."
So a huge green tip is to have one or no children!!!
