Well it's true, not to that extent, especially here in North America at least for the time being. But really it just makes more sense. You can lower costs across the board living in a smaller space that is laid out efficiently. This is going to be the way we think in the future as space will be limited, but imagine an apt that was twice that size, but still laid out efficiently, you could have an apartment in a city that has everything in it.

I agree that is a practical solution to the apparent inevitability of our growing population and growing economy on this shrinking planet.
I live in an efficiency apt. myself and it's, well, efficient.
But suppose everyone could somehow agree to peacefully and voluntarily reduce the human population to a number that each regional environment could support without any damage to the ecosystem. Then, with only about 3 billion people everyone could have the space they need and want, and who would choose to live in a tiny big city apartment and ride the iron horse every day if they could instead live in the countryside in a neat little house with garden and fruit and nut trees and plenty of friends to help with everything? I lived in such a place for 8 years and I would never have left if too much money had not corrupted it beyond my endurance. Most people are addicted to money and power and they want more and more forever. But they will eventually realize a growing economy on a shrinking planet has no future, and then will it be too late to change? I hope not.
