A more recent concept for improving our electrical grid is to beam microwaves from Earth-orbiting satellites or the moon to directly when and where there is demand.
The power would be generated from solar energy captured on the lunar surface In this system, the receivers would be “broad, translucent tent-like structures that would receive microwaves and convert them to electricity”.
NASA said in 2000 that the technology was worth pursuing but it is still too soon to say if the technology will be cost-effective
This is interesting Knight, thanks for sharing and welcome to the Green Forum! Do you have a link you could provide on this story?

This is not a "recent development" it's an old idea, based on old technologies. It is practical and can work. The financial viability is starting to become a reality today! Also the concept is a little off from what SPS & CTM is.....
It's nice to see it up here on a environmentalist forum, because it has huge implications for the world!

They have not yet discovered any water on the Moon, without which no terra-forming is possible; so it might be used as a robotic space station, IF the human race survives its own violent, ecocidal madness, which now seems unlikely.

It's hard to communicate that SPS (solar power satellites) and moon colonization have the potential to save the world environmentally, and economically when there's so much propaganda/misleading info/etc out there.
There may be water on the moon, but it is of small consequence. There is no nitrogen, carbon, and limited/possible water hydrogen/oxygen. These are just small facts out of a long list of facts... but you had it right, the best option is to telecommute to the moon at first because it's only a 2-8 second delay.

I realize the need to grow is a very powerful instinct, but it needs to be regulated by common sense. Technology is wonderful and most people are good, but too much of any good thing turns it bad! The Earth is a living biosphere that started as a huge mass of hot gases 4.5 billion years ago, and since then it has continued to slowly cool and shrink. Nothing can stop that natural process, so there is a natural limit to how much the Earth can provide for our growing population and our growing economy. Already our growing masses of pollution are damaging the environment and threatening everyone's health. It has to be stopped, and the only effective way is to recycle 100% of all our waste and garbage and peacefully reduce our population. Otherwise, our growing economy will kill the living biosphere that no one can live without. Technology is helping, but we humans are the basic problem and we are the solution, but we need to THINK beyond our instincts.
