LCD/Plasma TV consume less power than CRT?

Is it really true that these new LCD/plasma television are more energy efficient than their CRT counterparts even though they are how many times bigger?

while the LCD supposedly should consume less power compared to tube-type TVs, the wide-screen ones most people use today with over 38 even up to 50 inch screens consume more power. more so with plasma type TVs. here read these articles I've come across -

Thanks for those links Cheryl. It's an interesting read. One of the articles is old though. The other is more recent. So perhaps over those years, since LCD/Plasma TVs have been around for a number of years now, they've improved a lot in terms of energy efficiency and consumption?

wow 10% of energy that TV consumes is when on standby mode?! that's a huge number already, right? I don't usually unplug my TVs. When I turn the TV off there is that red LED that keeps lighted. So this means even if its supposed to be turned "off" it's still eating up energy. ok well I better start unplugging my TVs. That's savings from electricity bills for me there.

You also have to consider that these widescreen Plasma/LCD TV come in mostly with surround-sound/multiple speaker systems that also consume power. That adds up to everything. So perhaps they are more of a energy hog than the old cathode tube TV.
