    Default Centralized airconditioning more green?

Would a building be more "green" if it had centralized airconditioning compared to individual airconditioning units per room/section of every floor of the building? It's not really a skyscraper. Just a 5-6 story building of average size both with residential units on the upper floors and business units on the lower ones.

The landlord or building owner could put an air conditioning unit on the roof or in the cellar, but every occupant's rent would have to be raised to pay for it. Big time real estate managers do it because their clients can pay; but I doubt the 5-6 story renters could afford it.

On the other hand, I wonder if rooftop solar panels could generate enough electricity to operate such an airconditioning unit -- probably on hot, sunny days, but not on cloudy and cold winter days and nights.

I have a global solution to this local problem:

The only reason there is any sort of energy crisis at all is because far too many millions and billions of people are needing more and more every year. But if each community agreed on how many people the surrounding resources could support and established peaceful and voluntary family planning clinics, they could all enjoy full services without endangering the environment.

Was the building made to have centralized A/C? Because if it's not then you might have to spend a lot for it so that you have air vents running on each floor to each room.

nrdthxpr is right in that we need to consume less. It's one of the solution but that's gonna be very hard to accomplish. So we start with trying to green our homes or businesses like what you have in mind JJones.

Everyone thinks we have to use new technology to solve the green problem but that's not true. Mankind lived for thousands of years without ac, right. We took a wrong turn when we went down the industrial path and the only thing to correct it is to back up and go down the other path. There is no easy choice but this is the right thing to do. Drastic problems... drastic measures. According to some, by the time we find a solution it will be too late and mankind and earth as we know it will perish. THIS is the only way. Question is, does everyone take this serious enough to live a totally new and hard way of life? Probably not. Everyone is too spoiled.

That's a convenient rhetorical exercise. You pose a drastic solution you know cannot be accepted, so you're relieved from any sense of obligation and free to slam all the other ideas. Neat trick, but I won't play. I must keep trying to get people to think about what they're doing, you too.

if you are having to replace an existing system or install a new one you should take a look at geothermal heat pumps. 30% tax credit makes it very feasible. you can search DOE website or visit my sites for more information
