"They are call the microhybrids, or stop-start cars, which are so named because their combustion engines are turned off when the cars stop, say, at an intersection when the light turns red. They rely on batteries to keep the air conditioning, radio and other electronics running during the stop as well as to kick-start the engines after the light turns green."
Well, our 2009 Mercury Mariner does that, and under 41 mph goes on all electric, unless too much electric is being used for heater fans, or A/C. If you are going faster but downhill or at a good cruise, the engine leans itself to maximum efficiency. When braking, the batteries charge, too. If all city cars were like these, there wouldn't be any smog (if they got rid of industrial smoke and diesels, too.).
Val, have you seen "Journey To Planet Earth" with Matt Damon and Lester Brown? It's an excellent documentary and it was on last night. It promotes "Plan B" to do pretty much what I recommend and a lot more, not that I know of anyone who ever accessed my web pages and told me so. I can only imagine hopefully.
No we haven't seen that one and it isn't on Amazon. We disconnected from our satellite TV to take a break and watch all the DVDs and VHS videos we have.
I know of Lester Brown's basically inadequate (now) 2006 Plan B. Still, universal adoption of the principles would help mitigate what is to come with overpopulation, depletion, and pollution effects including AGW. People take baby steps when large strides are needed. It's too bad, but all we can do is continue to educate and press for change.
We wish we could change the world to a sustainable, happy place everywhere. However, we lack the power, and are up against universal ignorance, stupidity, and greed, along with archaic cultures, customs, and beliefs.
