Reusing items instead of just disposing them will greatly help our planet, as it reduces the cost and energy needed to manufacture the product. It is a drop in the bucket of the large changes needed. We need to first cut fossil fuel burning and slash and burn agriculture 90% ASAP or with 10 years max. We need to begin a massive population reduction program through free birth control, women's rights, education on ecology, incentives to have no children, incentives to stop at one, and dis-incentives to having more. Massive campaigns to reduce water usage with efficiency and recycling/purifying better. Massive campaigns to compost all food scrap, excrement and even our dead, the way nature intended, to rebuild our depleted soils. Increase the GEN 4 reactors to replace all the coal fired power plants, encourage solar power and cooking, wind power, wave and tidal power. Get rid of the huge grids. Localize food and power, with more cottage farming and independent homes. Reduce the growth only economy to steady state environmental economics. Reduce, re-use and recycle with sustainability becoming a Holy Word!!! Return of sails to the seas, no jet traffic, and all bio-fuel hybrid or electric, or people powered transportation. Green as a way of life, both spiritually, and physically.

You summed it up all. However to get these things into the people's head you have to go one by one.
