I think this is a really great way to keep your house cool and energy efficient. The vegetation provides insulation and is a useful tool for storm water management. Plus it looks really cool too! So would you ever consider installing a green roof to reduce your electric bill or is this too much green for you? Here is a great article to help you make an informed decision. In Alaska quite some years ago a master carpenter named Dick Proennecke built a log cabin in the wilderness and filmed the entire procedure including how he greened his roof by first laying over the beams a cover of tar paper and some other kind of sheeting to prevent the wooden planks from rotting under the moist green layer of vegetation. He lived there for 35 years until age and the Alaska winters forced his retirement. The cabin has become a protected part of an Alaska State Park.

As a GC and Roofing contractor, I think everyone should know that a home should really be designed with a green roof from the start. Most homes are not designed to have the additional weight of waterproofing, soil, water and plant material on them. Before starting a project like a green roof, contact a local engineer and make sure your home can handle the weight. However, at very least when it comes time to installing a new roof you should install an energy star roof. They last longer, (meaning less material going to the landfills) They save on cooling cost, and in some cases can save on your taxes. The added cost is minimal for the benefits you get. So when building a new home, please go all out and make it as energy efficient as possible, have it build to hold a green roof even if you cannot install the green roof right away.

Another one post wonder, in the wrong section, and with the main purpose of spamming.

I used to work in nyc and the building I worked in installed a green roof. The management company told me that by doing this they saved almost 10% immediately. This also sparked a green revolution in the building. From changing light bulbs to implementing sunblocking shades. it was really interesting to learn about all the various ways to go more green and save $$ at the same time.
