Default AP INVESTIGATION: Blowout preventers known to fail (AP)

It's the same old story of corrupted politicians letting safety standards slide in favor of short term corporate savings, but resulting in long term multi-million dollar losses, in this case billions. Apparently, the "blow-out protector" needed regular maintainance, but that isn't possible a mile down under the sea. So, without maintainance, the huge machine failed -- and all the responsible parties knew the risk, but did nothing. Money talks and safety walks.

If the entire Gulf of Mexico and part of the Atlantic Ocean are polluted by this oil spill, further off shore drilling will probably be banned, which could cause a shortage of oil as the Worlwide demand grows, so then the price would rise. Wouldn't it be bizarre if this whole episode was instigated to hike the price of oil?!
