This shows how addicted the global economy has become to the oil industry. Without daring to say it, the oil barons are implying that we must all get used to occasional oil spills so we can go on enjoying the blessings of oil technology. Thus, the Gulf of Mexico becomes another "national sacrifice area" for Mankind's lust for ever-growing wealth and power (while the Earth cools and shrinks).
