Sec. Salazar knows that every American's bank account depends on the growing economy of a growing human population, and that depends on a growing supply of oil. So drill they must, regardless of this cooling and shrinking planet and the thousands of tons and barrels of accumulating industrial pollution that poison our water, air, soil, and our bodies.

Sec. Salazar also knows that when BP's oil spill is finally capped and plugged, there will be no more wilderness or fishing and tourist industries to oppose or limit an all-out drilling campaign, peppering the Gulf with thousands oil rigs. Like strip-mined Appalachia, the Gulf of Mexico has become a national, and in this case, a global "sacrifice area", all to eliminate America's dependence on foreign oil, never mind our dependence on a living planet.
