AFP - US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told lawmakers Wednesday that offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico will continue "in a safe way" in the wake of the massive Deepwater Horizon accident.
Sec. Salazar also knows that when BP's oil spill is finally capped and plugged, there will be no more wilderness or fishing and tourist industries to oppose or limit an all-out drilling campaign, peppering the Gulf with thousands oil rigs. Like strip-mined Appalachia, the Gulf of Mexico has become a national, and in this case, a global "sacrifice area", all to eliminate America's dependence on foreign oil, never mind our dependence on a living planet.
