The dilemma is the oil barons cannot maintain their upper class lifestyle if they have to spend multi-millions of dollars on anti-pollution equipment to obey the law, so of course they want to change that law. But whichever way the voters go, the CEOs will keep their big salaries even if they have to lay off thousands of their employees. But if the oil industry were nationalized the bureaucratic managers would behave no better. The solution is to convert to solar and wind as quickly as possible, and peacefully reduce public demand for electricity by peacefully reducing the population. A growing economy on a shrinking planet has no future.
