AFP - Russia and Vietnam signed a deal, worth an estimated four billion euros (5.6 billion dollars), for the Southeast Asian country's first nuclear power plant, an AFP reporter said.
I find this fascinating because former Soviet Russia and former socialist Vietnam were allies against French and U.S. domination, and they succeeded in winning full national sovereignty for Vietnam. But then the leaders of both nations realized that a complete socialist system could never grow the economy to compete with the Western commercial empire.
So, along with China they converted to capitalism and invited foreign investors to set up for-profit businesses, and this has caused their economies to grow in very effective competition with the West. But, like their Western counterparts, their growing economy needs growing amounts of energy, and nuclear is a time-tested though imperfect solution. So, we will see if those political dictatorships can make it work. The big problem, which they refuse to admit or discuss, is their growing populations and their growing industrial economies are destroying the ecosystems they cannot live without, a problem instinctively ignored by all of humanity around the World.
