AP - Back-room negotiations began in earnest Monday on a deal to rescue the only treaty governing greenhouse gas reductions and to launch talks on a broader agreement to include the world's largest polluters: China and other emerging economies, the United States and Europe.

Most of the negotiators represent nations that are committed to growing their national economies, which is a conflict of interest with the goal of reducing the environmental damage caused by those economies. So the whole thing is an exersize in futility. The human population will keep on growing with its expanding industries and growing pollution, the planet will warm another degree or two, the ice caps will melt, and Nature will resolve the problem in the dramatic ways for which she is so famous, and we humans will be lucky if any of us survive.
