LiveScience.com - The end of the world as we know it could come in any number of ways, depending on who you ask. Some people believe global cataclysm will occur when Earth's magnetic poles reverse. When north goes south, they say, the continents will lurch in one direction or the other, triggering massive earthquakes, rapid climate change and species extinctions.

Just remake all the maps and compasses. However, magnetic reversal usually took from 50 to 200 years, and happened many times in the geologic record. The main danger is the weakening of our magnetosphere and with it the possibility that a coronal mass discharge hit could destroy most life. Or a nearby supernova's radiation could do the same. It didn't happen in the countless reversals before, but is possible.
Like John said, it is far more likely human pollution will finish humans and most other species off.![]()
