Default Some oil spill events from May 4, 2010 (AP)

AP - Events May 4, Day 15 of a Gulf of Mexico oil spill that began with an explosion and fire on April 20 on the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, owned by Transocean Ltd. and leased by BP PLC, which is in charge of cleanup and containment. The blast killed 11 workers. Since then, oil has been pouring into the Gulf from a blown-out undersea well at about 210,000 gallons per day. The slick threatens the U.S. coastline.

According to recent news articles, the "blow out preventer", built by Cameron International of Houston, apparently failed to withstand the pressure of the blow out, but instead was itself blown apart, which indicates it may not have been designed properly. Yet, apparently it is still in use at many other deep water drill sites. So, it looks like further blow outs may occur with similar results.

As our planet cools and shrinks, its internal pressure increases, resulting in volcanos and earth quakes. That is the cause of "blow outs" when oil drillers fail to take the difficult, expensive but necessary precautions to keep the pressure under safe control. But a mile under the sea no "hands-on" engineering is possible, so the drillers are operating with robot machinery and if something goes wrong they can only guess what happened.
