Y! Green - Every time there's an energy-related disaster, it boosts the prospects for clean alternatives. Last month's devastating explosion at the Upper Big Branch coal mine killed 29, and got people wondering if all that ancient coal shouldn't just be left in the ground. And the spreading oil slick from the Deep Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico led to a flurry of Congressional bills banning offshore drilling, and rising public sentiment for cleaner alternatives.

Whatever energy technology is invented, wind, solar, geothermal, wave, whatever, they cannot possibly keep up and supply a relentlessly growing population and its relentlessly growing industrial complex. The question needs to be asked, investigated and answered: How many people can the Earth support? Then the human race needs to agree on peaceful, voluntary family planning programs that allow women to decide how many children their families can support. Then, as the human population returns to a reasonable balance with each regional environment, there will be plenty of oil, coal, wind, solar, geothermal and wave energy for the smaller number of people. A growing economy on a shrinking planet has no future, so return this global biosphere to it natural order. Otherwise, we face ecocide and extinction inflicted on ourselves because of greed and myopia.
