Robert Redford says it well in this NRDC video: “if there’s a lesson in all of this… is that we have to get off our dependence on oil.”

we need to get the US Senate to pass clean energy legislation.
But that can't happen as long as the oil lobbyists have a strangle hold on Congress and government agencies. President Obama does a lot of posturing and eloquent speech making, but BP and all the other oil corporations will go right on drilling and ignoring safety procedures because they own so much of the global economy there is nothing and no one to stop them from doing whatever they find profitable. So they expect us to go right on buying oil-based products and get used to an occasional oil spill as the price of progress.
In response, there is a movement to boycott BP products and oil technology generally, but I know a way to put an end to this entire global addiction to oil-for-a-growing-economy. It is this:
Without a growing population BP and all the other ambitious corporations and their government yes-men would lose their power to manipulate the people and the environment. The people would then be free to govern themselves in their own communities and to trade freely with each other with harm to none; and with a stable population there would be plenty of resources for everyone. So, peacefully reduce the human population to a number of people who can live at peace with each other and in balance with the Earth's ability to support life.
How can we do this? By giving each and every woman the legally protected right to decide if and when to birth her children, with the help of gentle friends and a local family planning clinic. Very few women want 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 children. More want none at all. But the vast majority want no more than 1, 2 or 3 because they can be fairly sure they will survive with the help of modern medicine.
That way the human population will drop back to only about 3 or 4 billion, the wilderness will be healthy and free to evolve, and with the help of appropriate technology, everyone will enjoy peace and reasonable prosperity.
If not, a growing population and its growing economy on a cooling and shrinking planet has no future.

Admiral Allen is right. This oil spill tragedy will extend into the Summer and Fall at least. But that depends on when BP decides to cap and plug the leaking well, probably not until the Gulf is so polluted there will no longer be any fishing and tourist industries to put limits on further drilling by BP and the other oil corporations. Soon the Gulf will be nothing but a sea of oil rigs. In my opinion, that's what this is all about.
