ContributorNetwork - When my husband and I moved into the Army housing at Fort Polk, we soon started getting statements of our electric use compared to the other houses on post. For almost the whole first year that we lived there, these statements were a part of a new program that was going to be implemented in the coming months. The goal was to make residents of Fort Polk aware of their energy consumption in an effort to curb all of the unneeded energy use. After the trial period ended, any residents whose electrical use was above the average of the neighborhood had to pay the difference. Even though this wasn't a popular program on post for obvious reasons, it got residents to start thinking about how they can help out the environment just by doing little things like unplugging appliances before going to bed. And this is not the only thing that the Army has done in the last few years to try to become more environmentally friendly or go green.
