Thousands of tons of garbage and sludge are dumped directly into the ocean every day, so mass extinctions are inevitable, obviously. If nations and corporations were required by law to safely recycle 100% of all human-generated waste materials around the World, the extinctions might be avoided, but then corporate executives would be unable to pay themselves million dollar salaries and bonuses because recycling would consume their profits, so they choose to "go out in style", "rich to the last day", and the money-addicted human race allows such criminal behavior because they're all "in the game". So, this is one of the ways a planet can die -- psychotic greed.
