The first paragraph was in error: "It is understandable why most people believe solar power is more of a futuristic technology than a modern one. Solar power is still prohibitively expensive (especially for the individual homeowner) and unreliable."
Our independent home solar electric system was not that expensive and has been more reliable than the grid.
The cost of the paint on may be 1/40th the so-called cost of regular solar, but it has to be painted on a translucent conductive surface which costs are not included. Its longevity is in doubt also. It will probably need an unbreakable clear covering. The company, Nanosolar is only doing large commercial projects with their similar thin film tech. Several years ago it was thought the paint on thin films would be cheap and plentiful, and people dis-informed of solar's cost thought they would wait.
