Default Earth Day signals a trend in eco-travel

Everybody's got green on the brain these days, and not just because it's Earth Day on Wednesday.
The travel industry has been on board the eco-bandwagon in a big way lately, with hotels and resorts practicing sustainability, promoting carbon neutrality and investing in community givebacks in consumer-friendly ways that translate into savings for everyone, Mother Earth included.
In celebration of Earth Day, here's a guide to getaways near and far that are not only making the planet green, they can save you some green.
    CLOSE TO HOME
Hybrid drivers not only reduce their carbon footprint, they get free lodging in Ithaca, N.Y. Ranging from a garden yurt (a dome-shaped building) to a repurposed 1850s barn, four eco-friendly B&Bs are rewarding alternative autos with a free night on stays of two nights or longer through May 10. The participating B&Bs are Climbing Vine Cottage, an elegant yurt that sleeps six (www.climbingvinecottage.com); Frog's Way B&B and Wild Goose B&B, both in EcoVillage, Ithaca's 174-acre sustainable community (Frogs Way Home, www.wildgoose-bb.com); and Turtle Dreams, a groovy barn in a family-friendly tepee village (Turtle Dreams B&B: In the Finger Lakes Region of Central New York). Prices range from $65-$150, depending on the property.
The Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel has an eco-inspired deal that complements its green roof and total-recycling initiatives: Take a car-free vacation and trek on foot. Overnight accommodations, from $229, include a Boston Harbor walking guide, a $200 Passport of Savings for Faneuil Hall Marketplace, two organic glasses of wine at 606 Congress restaurant and a donation toward protecting 1.4 million acres of endangered Brazilian rainforest. Loews Hotels is encouraging even its furry guests to do their part in promoting responsible, sustainable consumption, with a Grrreen Dog package featuring a veterinarian approved room service feast of ingredients from neighborhood farms. Rates are from $169 per night at Loews Philadelphia Hotel and $119 per night at Loews Denver Hotel. Included are an organic cotton bandanna and a nontoxic, recyclable toy. Well, I guess that if you have Earth Day everyday, not like I am complaining or anything, most people would forget that it is a day to help the Earth. It might be better if there was more than one day, but not too much.

I have heard a lot about air travel posing damage to our air but nothing says about travel by sea. How eco friendly is travelling by ship anyway? I think it is probably no better because they dump all the waste at sea literally.
