LED's is where it's at. They're just not as reasonable in price as they will be in the years ahead.

Living in an all solar house for over 12 years, CFLs have served us well. Low cost per lumen hour, and even now still 1/9th the lumen hour cost of LEDs. Sure there's a little tiny bit of mercury in them, and if they go out, should be put in a facility for recycling them. We've had less than half a dozen go out on us. We don't leave lights on all the time. The mercury is minuscule in comparison to that which is falling out from dirty coal burning, contaminating fish (especially the higher food chain) from the Pacific to pristine mountain lakes, and soils world wide. Ban the coal plants and make everyone go wind, hydro, solar, or even nuclear. Bring down the prices on LEDs of equivalent lumens. Outlaw V-6s and V-8s, and cut diesel shipping and airline flights 90%, and outlaw coal burning power plants and many manufacturing plants that use it.

Ive been hearing about massive price drops in LED, so it should not be far away from being economical.

I don't think that large LEDs will be around in the future though

60 watt equivalent LEDs are available for $50 per bulb unit, they use 10 watts versus 11 watts for the CFL which you can get for $3 or less and last about half as long as the LED.
