A Revolutionary New Green Idea - A Global Carpooling Website - |Green Forum|

Long story short, I just wanted to share idea I had that I actually think is the best idea I've ever had in my life. The idea came to me one day, while I was sitting by the highway, watching thousands and thousands of cars go by using millions of barrels of gasoline in a day - There are four seats in the average vehicle... why don't we use them?

That simple idea developed into a global carpooling website where users can book rides with other carpoolers in their area that they otherwise wouldn't be able to get connected with. Think about it, how many people are driving to the same place, with three or more empty seats in their vehicle, on any given stretch of busy highway? If you stood on an overpass outside any major U.S. city and could choose any car that passed beneath you to ride in, you would be able to ride almost anywhere. How many people drive by your home every day, going to or by the same place you are? If ONLY you could get connected with them... see, the internet allows literally anyone to connect with anyone worldwide, so users can book rides with other people.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized how powerful of an idea it really is... its not just about halving the expense it takes you to get to and from where you need to go every day, it gets FAR better - imagine the positive effects of having so many fewer cars on the roads globally, potentially 3/4ths less. Everyone saves money, pollution caused by transportation is cut, oil demand is cut, AND there is less traffic!

The step I've taken to make this idea reality, other than sharing it here, is to enter my idea in a competition that National Geographic is holding for any "Green Ideas." Five winners will be selected to win $20,000 grants to put their idea into action.

The most important thing for positive discussion on this thread is that you read the detailed plans, which explain my ideas to solve legal problems, The idea of 'strangers' riding together, and the funding issues building such a website would create. I also encourage anyone to share this idea and the links to ANYONE and ANY forum they wish - the more exposure, the better. Its time to stop waiting for the world to change. Its time to change the world.

very good article with nice ideas. i think the major turn point will be if more and more people will use bicycles instead of cars. i cycle everyday instead of having a car.
