Default Ideas on how to solve the "Last mile" issue

We are currently working on a university research project in the field of innovation, focusing on how to solve the "Last mile" issue when it comes to transit. We raise the question: How to best bridge the distance between the public transport station and your final destination (your office or another point of interest)? There are some solutions (e.g. Segways), but apparently they do not solve all the needs. We are really looking for new approaches and ideas.
Do you have any suggestions or experiences regarding the solving of the "Last mile" issue? Is it relevant to you? Does this problem need more individual, flexible approaches like segways, or can changes in city infrastructure also solve this need?
We highly appreciate any suggestions and opinions.
    Kind regards,
Smart Cities Project team, Vienna University of Economics and Business

In NYC I suffered for years riding the iron horse to work, and then I moved into a neighborhood within walking distance of the company I worked for, and I lived there for 9 years. So, the answer is that simple. Make it possible for everyone to live within walking distance of their jobs.

The "last mile" is walkable for those not too lazy. Allow an extra 15 minutes to walk. If the sidewalks are too crowded, then the city should reduce its population by whatever means necessary. There could be moving sidewalks like some airline terminals, at great expense, that people who are making less and less will not want to pay for. Many would trip and fall, then sue the city with shyster lawyers. Same with electric segways hitting those walking.
A "smart city," to me, would be a sustainable city---a rare thing indeed in this grossly overpopulated world on the edge of collapse.

The question is: What can human beings agree to do about anything? Obviously, life on Earth is genetically programmed to grow forever regardless of consequences. Therefore, no city will ever agree to "reduce its population by any means necessary". Instead, they will go right on growing until a catastrophe stops them. That's been the history of human society and I don't see any real change, just a lot of high technology to promote more and more of the same relentless growth until.......KLUNK!!!
